Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.
Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.

Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?
A. The Britons got expensive tea from India.
B. Tea reached Britain from Holland. B.
C. The Britons were the first people in Europe who drank tea. C.
D. It was not until the 17th century that the Britons had tea. D.
A选项“英国人从印度得到昂贵的茶叶”可定位到第二段“在17世纪早期,东印度公司的船只开始从中国直接将茶叶运来之前,茶叶在英国一直既稀缺又昂贵”,也就是说英国人从东印度公司得到的茶叶比之前的便宜,故选项A不符合原文,属于曲解原文;
C选项“英国人是欧洲最早喝茶的人”原文没有提及,属于无中生有;
This passage mainly discusses_______. 这篇文章主要讨论_______。
A. the history of tea drinking in Britain A. 英国人饮茶的历史
B. how tea became a popular drink in Britain B.
C. how the Britons got the habit of drinking tea C.
D. how tea-time was born D.
【答案】A
B选项“在英国,茶是如何成为一种受欢迎的饮料的”,原文虽有提及英国人越来越喜欢茶,但并没有清楚交代它如何成为一种受欢迎的饮料的,属于无中生有;
C选项“英国人是如何养成喝茶的习惯的”主要是讲英国人喝茶加奶的习惯,可定位到第三段,不能囊括全文,属于以偏概全;
Tea became a popular drink in Britain _______. _______,
A. in eighteenth century A. 在十八世纪
B. in sixteenth century B.
C. in seventeenth century C.
D. in the late seventeenth century D.
【解题思路】根据第三段首句“与此同时,欧洲大陆上的人们越来越喜欢茶”,这里“At the same time”指上一段提及的“During the next few years(在接下来的几年里)”,再根据前一句提及的时间“early in the seventeenth century(17世纪早期)”可知,选项C正确。
People in Europe began to drink tea with milk because _______.
A. it tasted like milk A. 它尝起来像牛奶
B. it tasted more pleasant B.
C. it became a popular drink C.
D. people tried to copy the way Madame de Sevigne drank tea D. 人们尝试模仿Madame de Sevigne的喝茶方式
A选项“它尝起来像牛奶”原文没有提及,属于无中生有;
B选项“它尝起来味道更好”可定位到第三段“她觉得味道非常好,没有牛奶她就再也不喝了。”由此可知,选项B讲的是Madame de Sevigne喝茶加奶的原因,而不是欧洲人开始喝茶加奶的原因,属于张冠李戴;
We may infer from the passage that the habit of drinking tea in Britain was mostly due to the influence of _______.
A. a famous French lady A. 一位著名的法国女士
B. the ancient Chinese B.
C. the upper social class C.
D. people in Holland D.
【答案】A
B选项“古代中国人”原文首段有提及,说的是欧洲人听说茶之前,喝茶在中国已经流行了近一千年,由此并不能推出英国人喝茶的习惯受到古代中国人的影响,属于推理过度;
C选项“上层社会”原文没有提及,属于无中生有;
