In 1957, a doctor in Singapore noticed that hospitals were treating an unusual number of influenza-like cases. Influenza is sometimes called “flu” or a “bad cold”. He took samples from the throats of patients and in his hospital he was able to find the virus of this influenza.
There are three main types of the influenza virus. The most important of these are type A and B, each of them having several subgroups. With the instruments at the hospital the doctor recognized that the outbreak was due to a virus in group A but he did not know the subgroup. Then he reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization in Geneva. A.W.H.O. published the important news alongside reports of a similar outbreak in Hong Kong of China, where about 15%-20% of the population had become ill.
As soon as the London doctors received the package of throat samples, doctors began the standard tests. They found that by reproducing itself with very high speed, the virus had grown more than a million times within two days. Continuing their careful tests, the doctors checked the effect of drugs against all the known subgroups of virus type A. A.None of them gave any protection. This, then, was something new, a new influenza virus, against which the people of the world had no help whatever.
Having found the virus they were working with, the two doctors now dropped it into the noses of some specially selected animals, which get influenza as much as human beings do. In a short time the usual signs of the disease appeared. D.These experiments proved that the new virus was easy to catch, but that it was not a killer. Scientists, like the general public, call it simply Asian flu.
The first discovery of the virus, however, was made in mainland China before the disease had appeared in other countries. Various reports showed that the influenza outbreak started in mainland China, probably in February of 1957. By the middle of March it had spread all over the mainland. D.The virus was found by Chinese doctors early in March. But at that time China was not a member of the World Health Organization and therefore did not report outbreaks of disease to it. Not until two months later, when travelers carried the virus into Hong Kong, China, from where it spread to Singapore, did the news of the outbreak reach the rest of the world. D.By this time it was well started on its way around the world.
Thereafter, WHO’s Weekly Reports described the steady spread of this great virus outbreak, which within four months swept through every continent.

The outbreak in Hong Kong, China, was due to a virus in ____.
A. a new subgroup of Group A A. A型的一个新亚群
B. an old subgroup of Group A B. A型的一个旧亚群
C. a new subgroup of Group B C. B
D. an old subgroup of Group B D. B
Why did the two doctors drop the flu into the noses of animals?
A. To decide on the virus name.
B. To see how it can affect the animals. B.
C. To find the channel of the virus spread. C.
D. To test the speed and effect of virus reproduction. D.
(These experiments proved that the new virus was easy to catch, but that it was not a killer)。”根据“the new virus was easy to catch, but that it was not a killer”可推断,医生是为了测试病毒繁殖的速度和效果,D选项正确。
A选项定位到第四段最后一句“科学家们和普通大众一样,称其为亚洲流感。”与两位医生要把流感病毒滴入动物的鼻子里无关,属于出处错位;
B选项虽然提到了“这些动物和人类一样会得流感。”但结合下文“这些实验证明,新病毒很容易感染,但并不是致命的”可知,最终还是为了测试病毒繁殖的速度和效果,属于曲解原文;
The Asian flu virus ____.
A. was a killer A. 是一个杀手
B. was very weak B.
C. could reproduce very quickly C.
D. died very fast D.
【解题思路】文章第四段提到“这些实验证明,新病毒很容易感染(the new virus was easy to catch),但并不是致命的。”
A选项定位到第四段倒数第二句“这些实验证明,新病毒很容易感染,但并不是致命的(it was not a killer)”,属于反向干扰;
B选项根据第三段最后一句“这就是一种新的流感病毒,世界上的人们对它毫无办法。”以及最后一段“世界卫生组织的《每周报告》描述了这一病毒大爆发的持续传播情况,它在四个月内席卷了各大洲。”可推断,亚洲流感病毒并不弱,属于反向干扰;
Where was the flu first found?
A. In Hong Kong, China.
B. In Singapore. B.
C. In mainland China. C.
D. Not mentioned. D.
(The first discovery of the virus, however, was made in mainland China before the disease had appeared in other countries.)。”
When did the virus reach the rest of the world?
A. In February. A. 二月份。
B. Before March. B.
C. In April. C. 四月。
D. After May. D.
(Not until two months later),旅行者将病毒带入中国香港,并从那里传播到新加坡,疫情才传到世界其他地方。 (By this time it was well started on its way around the world.)。”
A选项根据“各种报告显示,流感爆发始于中国大陆,可能是在1957年2月。”可知,2月是流感在中国大陆爆发的时间,属于答非所问;
B选项根据“到3月中旬,疫情已蔓延到整个中国大陆。3月初,中国医生发现了病毒。”可知,3月这段时间,病毒还是在中国大陆蔓延,属于答非所问;
