Under the efforts of the central and local governments, China has made certain achievements in the aspect of energy conservation and emissions reduction in 2008. The annual report made by the National Bureau of Statistics in February showed that China’s energy consumption dropped by 4.59% in 2008, slightly higher than the decline of about 4.21% previously estimated by the National Bureau of Statistics. But the data indicated that the emission amount of the two major pollutants SO2 and COD fell by 7% and 5% respectively compared with those in 2005. According to the 11th five-year plan, by 2010, the demand for industrial water will be 20% lower than that in 2005, but the rate of forest coverage will account for 20% of the national territory area, rising 18.2% than that in 2005.
