Hongbao, which literally means “a little red envelope”, is an important element of Chinese New Year. The cash inside is considered as lucky money for the coming year. It is usually given by elders to younger generations, especially children, but if you have a nice income, it’s polite to give some money to your parents and grandparents at this time of year. If you are married, you have to give red envelopes; if you are single, you usually receive one. If you are invited to someone’s home for Chinese New Year and you know they have children, it is best to put some cash in a red envelope. And if you visit the north, the amount of cash in it should be a round number, and if you visit the South, choose a lucky number (any number with a 6 or 8).
