In the delivery of a high standard of medical care, the safety of the patient is paramount. It seems that medical blunders are emerging almost on a daily basis. But we need to keep a sense of perspective.
While such incidents are worrying, they should not necessarily be seen as a sign that things are getting worse and that patients are being exposed to increasing risks. They may simply have been coming to light more frequently. If so, that is good. The hospital part has rightly promised to see that they are always brought to public attention from now on. Prompt disclosure of possible defects in the healthcare system and transparent action to remedy them can only have a positive effect on the standard of care in the long run.
