【参考译文】In the information exchange between China and the West, Chinese people have always had far more access to information about the West than the West has had about China. China began translating and introducing Western literature and scientific books on a large scale as early as the beginning of the last century, and the effort has only intensified since then. Translated works have a wide readership in China. A Chinese student cannot prepare for university without some understanding of British literature and the history of the Industrial Revolution. Moreover, as more and more Chinese people are able to read English, bookstores in Beijing and Shanghai now stock entire shelves of English-language original books. However, this exchange is not balanced. In the West, it is rare to see books about modern China, even in schools and libraries, let alone in bookstores.
