1、The idea that plants have some degree of consciousness first took root in the early 2000s; the term “plant neurobiology” was _1_ around the notion that some aspects of plant behavior could be _2_ to intelligence in animals. _3_ plants lack brains, the firing of electrical signals in their stems and leaves nonetheless triggered responses that _4_ consciousness, researchers previously reported.    But such an idea is untrue, according to a new opinion article. Plant biology is complex and fascinating, but it _5_ so greatly from that of animals that so-called _6_ of plants’ intelligence is inconclusive, the authors wrote.Beginning in 2006, some scientists have _7_ that plants possess neuron-like cells that interact with hormones and neurotransmitters, _8_ “a plant nervous system, _9_ to that in animals,” said lead study author Lincoln Taiz, “They _10_ claimed that plants have ‘brain-like command centers’ at their root tips.”    This _11_ makes sense if you simplify the workings of a complex brain, _12_ it to an array of electrical pulses; cells in plants also communicate through electrical signals. _13_, the signaling in a plant is only _14_ similar to the firing in a complex animal brain, which is more than “a mass of cells that communicate by electricity,” Taiz said.    “For consciousness to evolve, a brain with a threshold _15_ of complexity and capacity is required,” he _16_. “Since plants don’t have nervous systems, the _17_ that they have consciousness are effectively zero.”    And what’s so great about consciousness, anyway? Plants can’t run away from _18_, so investing energy in a body system which _19_ a threat and can feel pain would be a very _20_ evolutionary strategy, according to the article.

2、People often complain that plastics are too durable. Water bottles, shopping bags, and other trash litter the planet, from Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench, because plastics are everywhere and don’t break down easily. But some plastic materials change over time. They crack and frizzle. They “weep” out additives. They melt into sludge. All of which creates huge headaches for institutions, such as museums, trying to preserve culturally important objects. The variety of plastic objects at risk is dizzying: early radios, avant-garde sculptures, celluloid animation stills from Disney films, the first artificial heart.    Certain artifacts are especially vulnerable because some pioneers in plastic art didn’t always know how to mix ingredients properly, says Thea van Oosten, a polymer chemist who, until retiring a few years ago, worked for decades at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE). “It’s like baking a cake: If you don’t have exact amounts, it goes wrong.” she says. “The object you make is already a time bomb.”    And sometimes, it’s not the artist’s fault. In the 1960s, the Italian artist Piero Gilardi began to create hundreds of bright, colorful foam pieces. Those pieces included small beds of roses and other items as well as a few dozen “nature carpets”—large rectangles decorated with foam pumpkins, cabbages, and watermelons. He wanted viewers to walk around on the carpets—which meant they had to be durable.    Unfortunately, the polyurethane foam he used is inherently unstable. It’s especially vulnerable to light damage, and by the mid-1990s, Gilardi’s pumpkins, roses, and other figures were splitting and crumbling. Museums locked some of them away in the dark.    So van Oosten and her colleagues worked to preserve Gilardi’s sculptures. They infused some with stabilizing and consolidating chemicals. Van Oosten calls those chemicals “sunscreens” because their goal was to prevent further light damage and rebuild worn polymer fibers. She is proud that several sculptures have even gone on display again, albeit sometimes beneath protective cases.    Despite success stories like van Oosten’s, preservation of plastics will likely get harder. Old objects continue to deteriorate. Worse, biodegradable plastics designed to disintegrate, are increasingly common.    And more is at stake here than individual objects. Joana Lia Ferreira, an assistant professor of conservation and restoration at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, notes that archaeologists first defined the great material ages of human history—Stone Age, Iron Age, and so on—after examining artifacts in museums. We now live in an age of plastic, she says, “and what we decide to collect today, what we decide to preserve… will have a strong impact on how in the future we’ll be seen.”21. According to Paragraph 1, museums are faced with difficulties in ________.22. Van Oosten believes that certain plastic objects are ________.23. 3、As the latest crop of students pen their undergraduate application form and weigh up their options, it may be worth considering just how the point, purpose and value of a degree has changed and what Generation Z need to consider as they start the third stage of their educational journey.    Millennials were told that if you did well in school, got a decent degree, you would be set up for life. But that promise has been found wanting. As degrees became universal, they became devalued. Education was no longer a secure route of social mobility. Today, 28 percent of graduates in the UK are in non-graduate roles, a percentage which is double the average among OECD countries.    This is not to say that there is no point in getting a degree, but rather stress that a degree is not for everyone, that the switch from classroom to lecture hall is not an inevitable one and that other options are available.    Thankfully, there are signs that this is already happening, with Generation Z seeking to learn from their millennial predecessors, even if parents and teachers tend to be still set in the degree mindset. Employers have long seen the advantages of hiring school leavers who often prove themselves to be more committed and loyal employees than graduates. Many too are seeing the advantages of scrapping a degree requirement for certain roles.    For those for whom a degree is the desired route, consider that this may well be the first of many. In this age of generalists, it pays to have specific knowledge or skills. Postgraduates now earn 40 percent more than graduates. When more and more of us have a degree, it makes sense to have two.    It is unlikely that Generation Z will be done with education at 18 or 21; they will need to be constantly up-skilling throughout their career to stay employable. It has been estimated that this generation, due to the pressures of technology, the wish for personal fulfillment and desire for diversity, will work for 17 different employers over the course of their working life and have five different careers. Education, and not just knowledge gained on campus, will be a core part of Generation Z’s career trajectory.    Older generations often talk about their degree in the present and personal tense: “I am a geographer.” or “I am a classicist.” Their sons or daughters would never say such a thing; it’s as if they already know that their degree won’t define them in the same way.26. The author suggests that Generation Z should ________.27. The percentage of UK graduates in non-graduate roles reflect ________.28. The author considers it a good sign that ________.29. 4、Enlightening, challenging, stimulating, fun. These were some of the words that Nature readers used to describe their experience of art-science collaborations in a series of articles on partnerships between artists and researchers. Nearly 40% of the roughly 350 people who responded to an accompanying poll said, they had collaborated with artists, and almost all said they would consider doing so in future.    Such an encouraging results is not surprising. Scientists are increasingly seeking out visual artists to help them communicate their work to new audiences. “Artists help scientists reach a broader audience and make emotional connections that enhance learning.” One respondent said.    One example of how artists and scientists have together rocked the scenes came last month when the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed a reworked version of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. They reimagined the 300-year-old score by injecting the latest climate prediction data for each season—provided by Monash University’s Climate Change Communication Research Hub. The performance was a creative call to action ahead of November’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, UK.    But a genuine partnership must be a two-way street. Fewer artists than scientists responded to the Nature poll, however, several respondents noted that artists do not simply assist scientists with their communication requirements. Nor should their work be considered only as an object of study. The alliances are most valuable when scientists and artists have a shared stake in a project, are able to jointly design it and can critique each other’s work. Such an approach can both prompt new research as well as result in powerful art.    More than half a century ago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) opened its Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) to explore the role of technology in culture. The founders deliberately focused their projects around light—hence the “visual studies” in the name. Light was a something that both artists and scientists had an interest in and therefore could form the basis of collaboration. As science and technology progressed, and divided into more sub-disciplines, the center was simultaneously looking to a time when leading researchers could also be artists, writers and poets, and vice versa.    Nature’s poll findings suggest that this trend is as strong as ever, but, to make a collaboration work both sides need to invest time and embrace surprise and challenge. The reach of art-science tie-ups needs to go beyond the necessary purpose of research communication, and participants must not fall into the trap of stereotyping each other. Artists and scientists alike are immersed in discovery and invention, and challenge and critique are core to both, too.31. According to Paragraph 1, art-science collaborations have ________.32. The reworked version of The Four Seasons is mentioned to show that ________.33. Some artists seem to worry about in the art-science partnership ________.34. What does the author say about CAVS?35. 5、The personal grievance provisions of New Zealand’s Employment Relations Act 2000 (ERA) prevent an employer from firing an employee without good cause. Instead, dismissals must be justified. Employers must both show cause and act in a procedurally fair way.    Personal grievance procedures were designed to guard the jobs of ordinary workers from “unjustified dismissals”. The premise was that the common law of contract lacked sufficient safeguards for workers against arbitrary conduct by management. Long gone are the days when a boss could simply give an employee contractual notice.    But these provisions create difficulties for businesses when applied to highly paid managers and executives. As countless boards and business owners will attest, constraining firms from firing poorly performing, high-earning managers is a handbrake on boosting productivity and overall performance. The difference between C-grade and A-grade managers may very well be the difference between business success or failure. Between preserving the jobs of ordinary workers or losing them. Yet mediocrity is no longer enough to justify a dismissal.    Consequently—and paradoxically—laws introduced to protect the jobs of ordinary workers may be placing those jobs at risk.    If not placing jobs at risk, to the extent employment protection laws constrain business owners from dismissing under-performing managers, those laws act as a constraint on firm productivity and therefore on workers’ wages. Indeed, in “An International Perspective on New Zealand’s Productivity Paradox” (2014), the Productivity Commission singled out the low quality of managerial capabilities as a cause of the country’s poor productivity growth record.    Nor are highly paid managers themselves immune from the harm caused by the ERA’s unjustified dismissal procedures. Because employment protection laws make it costlier to fire an employee, employers are more cautious about hiring new staff. This makes it harder for the marginal manager to gain employment. And firms pay staff less because firms carry the burden of the employment arrangement going wrong.    Society also suffers from excessive employment protections. Stringent job dismissal regulations adversely affect productivity growth and hamper both prosperity and overall well-being.    Across the Tasman Sea, Australia deals with the unjustified dismissal paradox by excluding employees earning above a specified “high-income threshold” from the protection of its unfair dismissal laws. In New Zealand, a 2016 private members’ Bill tried to permit firms and high-income employees to contract out of the unjustified dismissal regime. However, the mechanisms proposed were unwieldy and the Bill was voted down following the change in government later that year.36. The personal grievance provisions of the ERA are intended to ________.37. It can be learned from paragraph 3 that the provisions may ________.38. Which of the following measures would the Productivity Commission support?39. What might be an effect of ERA’s unjustified dismissal procedures?40. It can be inferred that the “high-income threshold” in Australia ________.

Don’t Waste Your Emotions on Plants, They Have No Feelings, Grumpy Scientists Say(暴躁的科学家说:不要把你的情绪浪费在植物身上,它们没有感情)。

1. The idea that plants have some degree of consciousness first took root in the early 2000s; the term “plant neurobiology” was _1_ around the notion that some aspects of plant behavior could be _2_ to intelligence in animals. _3_ plants lack brains, the firing of electrical signals in their stems and leaves nonetheless triggered responses that _4_ consciousness, researchers previously reported.

B选项discovered指发现、找到某个已经存在的事物,不能和term(术语)相搭配;

4. This _11_ makes sense if you simplify the workings of a complex brain, _12_ it to an array of electrical pulses; cells in plants also communicate through electrical signals. _13_, the signaling in a plant is only _14_ similar to the firing in a complex animal brain, which is more than “a mass of cells that communicate by electricity,” Taiz said.

由which is more than “a mass of cells that communicate by electricity”(动物大脑不仅仅是“一群通过电流进行交流的细胞”)可知,此处与上文所说的“植物细胞也通过电信号进行交流”构成转折的逻辑关系。

由which is more than “a mass of cells that communicate by electricity”(动物大脑不仅仅是“一群通过电流进行交流的细胞”)可知,植物的信号传递和动物大脑的放电并不是真正的相似,只是表面上的。
A选项temporarily“暂时地;临时地”,B选项literally“真正地;确实地”和D选项imaginarily“想象中地”均不能和is more than(不仅仅是)相对应。

5. “For consciousness to evolve, a brain with a threshold _15_ of complexity and capacity is required,” he _16_. “Since plants don’t have nervous systems, the _17_ that they have consciousness are effectively zero.”

Since plants don’t have nervous systems(由于植物没有神经系统)可知,此处存在因果逻辑关系,植物没有神经系统的结果是植物不可能具有意识。

6. And what’s so great about consciousness, anyway? Plants can’t run away from _18_, so investing energy in a body system which _19_ a threat and can feel pain would be a very _20_ evolutionary strategy, according to the article.

【解题思路】本句主语是investing energy,系动词是would be,表语是a very ______ evolutionary strategy,空格处需要填入形容词作定语修饰evolutionary strategy,表示投入能量是一种非常______的进化策略。由Plants can’t run away from danger(植物无法逃离危险)和recognizes a threat and can feel pain(识别威胁并能感受到疼痛)可知,能感受到疼痛却无法逃离危险是一种糟糕的进化策略。

1. Water bottles, shopping bags, and other trash litter the planet, from Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench, because plastics are everywhere and don’t break down easily.
Water bottles, shopping bags, and other trash(主语)litter(谓语)the planet(宾语)

because原因状语从句:because(引导词)plastics(主语)are(系动词)everywhere(表语)and(连词)don’t break down [easily](谓语)

① from Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench是介词短语作插入语,说明塑料垃圾遍布地球的范围。
2. Joana Lia Ferreira, an assistant professor of conservation and restoration at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, notes that archaeologists first defined the great material ages of human history—Stone Age, Iron Age, and so on—after examining artifacts in museums.
主句:Joana Lia Ferreira(主语)notes(谓语)that从句(宾语)

that宾语从句:that(引导词)archaeologists(主语)[first] defined(谓语)the great material ages of human history(宾语)

① an assistant professor of conservation and restoration at the NOVA School of Science and Technology是Joana Lia Ferreira的同位语,补充说明其身份;
② 两个破折号之间的Stone Age, Iron Age, and so on是the great material ages of human history的同位语,举例说明考古学家定义的物质时代有哪些;
    不幸的是,他用的聚氨酯泡沫本身就不稳定。特别容易受到光照伤害,到20世纪90年代中期,吉拉迪的南瓜、玫瑰和其他塑像已经开裂、破碎。博物馆把其中一些锁在了暗室中。
    因此,范·奥斯藤和她的同事们致力于保护吉拉迪的雕塑。他们向其中一些注入了有稳定、巩固作用的化学物质。范·奥斯藤称这些化学物质为“防晒霜”,因为它们的目的是防止进一步的光照损伤并重建受损的聚合物纤维。令她感到自豪的是,有几件雕塑甚至再次展出,尽管有时是在保护套之下。
    尽管有范·奥斯藤这样的成功故事,但塑料的保存可能会变得越来越困难。旧物件继续恶化。更糟糕的是,设计为可分解的生物降解塑料越来越普遍。
    不仅仅是单个物件,还有更多的物件处于危险之中。新里斯本大学科技学院的保护与修复助理教授乔安娜·莉亚·费雷拉指出,考古学家在检查了博物馆里的文物后,首先定义了人类历史上伟大的物质时代——石器时代、铁器时代等等。她说,我们现在生活在一个塑料时代,“我们今天决定收集什么,我们决定保存什么……将对我们未来的形象产生强烈影响。”

3、试题答案:第1题:C;第2题:B;第3题:C;第4题:D;第5题:A;

Don’t Fixate over Your UCAS Form—One Degree Won’t Define Generation Z(不要拘泥于你的大学入学申请表——一个学位并不能定义Z世代)。

A选项“在选择大学时要谨慎”,由“权衡他们的选择(weigh up their options)”可知,此处是描述学生正在做的事,而不是作者向Z世代提出的建议,属于张冠李戴;
B选项“在每个教育阶段都要勤奋努力”在文中没有提及,属于无中生有;

(28 percent of graduates in the UK are in non-graduate roles),这一比例是经合组织国家平均水平的两倍”,上文说到“随着学位的普及,它们的价值也开始降低(devalued)。教育不再是社会阶级流动的可靠途径(no longer a secure route of social mobility)”,说明这一数据反映了大学学位的价值降低。
A选项“千禧一代对工作的看法”,由“千禧一代(Millennials)被告知,如果你在学校表现良好,获得一个体面的学位,你就能过上好日子”可知,这不是28%的数据反映的内容,属于出处错位;
C选项“公众对教育的不满”在文中没有提及,属于无中生有;

A选项“Z世代正在寻求获得一个体面的学位”,由“Z世代寻求向他们千禧一代的前辈学习(Generation Z seeking to learn from their millennial predecessors)”可知,现在的Z世代并没有追求体面的学位,属于反向干扰;
B选项“中学毕业生愿意成为技术工人”在文中没有提及,属于无中生有;

【解题思路】根据题干关键词the last two paragraphs可以定位到文章第六、七段,第六段说到“这一代人在其职业生涯中将为17个不同的雇主工作,从事5种不同的职业(work for 17 different employers over the course of their working life and have five different careers)。教育(Education),而不仅仅是在校园里获得的知识,将是Z世代职业轨迹的核心部分(will be a core part of Generation Z’s career trajectory)”,说明Z世代在未来的职业生涯中也会持续接受教育,第七段说到“就好像他们已经知道,自己的学位不会以同样的方式来定义他们(their degree won’t define them in the same way)”,说明定义Z世代的不再是学位,而是他们终身的学习。
B选项“他们将成为合格的教育工作者。”在文中没有提及,属于无中生有;
C选项“学位将不再吸引他们。”,由“教育,而不仅仅是在校园里获得的知识(not just knowledge gained on campus),将是Z世代职业轨迹的核心部分”可知,文章只是强调终身学习的重要性,不代表学位已经失去了吸引力,属于过度推断;
,由“这一代人在其职业生涯中将为17个不同的雇主工作,从事5种不同的职业(work for 17 different employers over the course of their working life and have five different careers)”可知,Z世代对工作的选择是很丰富的,属于反向干扰。

1. Nearly 40% of the roughly 350 people who responded to an accompanying poll said, they had collaborated with artists, and almost all said they would consider doing so in future.
1:Nearly 40% of the roughly 350 people(主语)said(谓语)

宾语从句1:they(主语)had collaborated with(谓语)artists(宾语)

who定语从句:who(主语)responded to(谓语)an accompanying poll(宾语)

分句2:almost all(主语)said(谓语)

宾语从句2:they(主语)would consider doing(谓语)so(宾语)in future(时间状语)

2. As science and technology progressed, and divided into more sub-disciplines, the center was simultaneously looking to a time when leading researchers could also be artists, writers and poets, and vice versa.
主句:the center(主语)was [simultaneously] looking to(谓语)a time(宾语)

when定语从句:when(引导词)leading researchers(主语)could also be(系动词)artists, writers and poets,(表语)and(连词)vice versa(状语)

时间状语从句:As(引导词)science and technology(主语)progressed(谓语1), and(连词)divided(谓语2)into more sub-disciplines(状语)

① simultaneously为副词作状语修饰谓语was looking to,表示同时展望;
    上个月,悉尼交响乐团演出了安东尼奥·维瓦尔第的《四季》的重制版,这是艺术家和科学家共同打造震撼场面的一个例子。他们通过在表演中注入由莫纳什大学气候变化传播研究中心提供的每个季节的最新气候预测数据,重构了这支拥有300年历史的乐曲。在11月于英国格拉斯哥举行的联合国气候变化大会之前,这一表演是一次创造性的呼吁行动。
    但真正的伙伴关系必须是双向的。然而,接受《自然》杂志调查的艺术家比科学家少,一些受访者指出,艺术家不仅仅是帮助科学家满足他们的交流需求。他们的工作也不应仅仅被视为研究对象。当科学家和艺术家在一个项目中拥有共同的利益,能够共同设计这个项目,并可以相互评判对方的工作时,这种联盟是最有价值的。这样的方法既可以促进新的研究,也可以产生有影响力的艺术。
    半个多世纪前,麻省理工学院开设了高级视觉研究中心,以探索科技在文化中的作用。它的创始人有意将他们的项目重点集中在光上——因此得名“视觉研究”。光是艺术家和科学家都感兴趣的东西,因此可以构成合作的基础。随着科学技术的发展,分化出了更多的分支学科,该中心同时展望着一个主要研究人员也可以是艺术家、作家和诗人的时代,反之亦然。
    《自然》杂志的调查结果显示,这一趋势一如既往地强劲,但是,为了使合作成功,双方都需要投入时间,接受意外和挑战。艺术与科学合作的范围需要超越科研传播这一必要目的的限制,且参与者必须避免陷入以刻板印象看待彼此的困境之中。艺术家和科学家都沉浸在发现和发明中,挑战和批判也是两者的核心。

5、试题答案:第1题:D;第2题:A;第3题:D;第4题:B;第5题:C;

Nothing Costs Nothing—Why Unjustified Dismissal Laws Should Not Apply to the Highly Paid(凡事都有代价——为什么不正当解雇法不应该适用于高薪人士)。

A选项“惩罚可疑的公司做法”在文中没有提及,属于无中生有;
B选项“改善传统的雇佣程序”,由“禁止雇主在没有正当理由的情况下解雇员工(firing an employee)”可知,个人申诉条款规定的是解雇程序,而不是雇佣程序,属于反向干扰;

关系到普通员工是保住工作还是下岗(preserving the jobs of ordinary workers or losing them)”,说明这些规定可能会阻碍企业的发展。

A选项“施加合理的工资限制。”,由“即使没有将工作置于危险之中,在限制企业所有者解雇表现不佳的经理这个层面上,这些法律也会限制企业的生产力,从而限制员工的工资(those laws act as a constraint on firm productivity and therefore on workers’ wages)”可知,限制员工工资是企业生产力受限的结果,而不是生产力委员会支持的做法,属于曲解原文;
B选项“强制执行就业保护法。”,由“在限制企业所有者解雇表现不佳的经理这个层面上,这些法律也会限制企业的生产力(those laws act as a constraint on firm productivity)”可知,强制执行就业保护法会限制企业的生产力,所以生产力委员会不会支持这种做法,属于反向干扰;

A选项“高薪的管理人员失去工作。”,由“这使得无足轻重的经理更难获得就业机会(makes it harder for the marginal manager to gain employment)”可知,不正当解雇程序是让管理人员难以得到工作,而不是失去工作,属于曲解原文;
C选项“社会整体福祉的上升。”,由“严格的解雇规定会对生产力的增长产生不利影响,阻碍繁荣和整体福祉(hamper both prosperity and overall well-being)”可知,不正当解雇程序会阻碍社会整体福祉的上升,属于反向干扰;

A选项“保证了管理人员的收入”,由“将收入超过特定‘高收入门槛’的员工排除在其不正当解雇法的保护之外(excluding employees earning above a specified “high-income threshold” from the protection of its unfair dismissal laws)”可知,高收入门槛不保证管理人员的收入,属于反向干扰;
B选项“产生了不理想的结果”在文中没有提及,属于无中生有;

1. As countless boards and business owners will attest, constraining firms from firing poorly performing, high-earning managers is a handbrake on boosting productivity and overall performance.
主句:constraining firms from firing poorly performing, high-earning managers(主语)is(系动词)a handbrake(表语)

方式状语从句:As(引导词)countless boards(主语1)and(连词)business owners(主语2)will attest(谓语)

① As引导方式状语从句,表示这种阻碍是如何证明的;
2. Across the Tasman Sea, Australia deals with the unjustified dismissal paradox by excluding employees earning above a specified “high-income threshold” from the protection of its unfair dismissal laws.
主句:Australia(主语)deals with(谓语)the unjustified dismissal paradox(宾语)

① Across the Tasman Sea是地点状语,表示澳大利亚的位置在塔斯曼海对岸;
② by excluding employees from the protection of its unfair dismissal laws是方式状语,表示澳大利亚应对不正当解雇悖论的方法;
