四、阅读理解

阅读理解:共15小题;每题3分,共45分。

1.American doctors working in France have used laser light beams to treat patients withheart disease Heart disease kills more people in industrial countries than, any. other dis-ease. A major form. of heart disease is arteriosclerosis or thé narrowing and hardening ofthe arteries that carry blood to the heart. When a person suffers from severe arteriosclerosis. fatty materials build up in his or her arteries. This build-up blocks the flow of blood, reducing the heart s blood supply. If the hearts blood supply becomes dangerously low orblocked completely by a blood clot, the patient will have a heart attack. More than 600,000 Americans die every year from heart attack caused by blocked arteries. American doctors from Seaton Medical Center in California used laser light beams to destroy material blocking. thearteries of four French heart, patients. The scientists triedthe new laser technique after they were invited to do so by doctors from Pupan Hospital inToulouse. France. It was the first time that doctors had used the intense, powerful beamsof laser light to burn through and destroy substances blocking human arteries. The doctors first made a small cut through the patients skin into the heart artery that wasblocked. They then placed a long plastic tube through the cut into the artery until the endof the tube reached the blocked area. The tube contained tiny fibers of glass through whichthe laser light could travel. Doctors fired a laser machine outside the patients body. Thepowerful light traveled through the tube to destroy the blood clots and fat that were blocking the artery. Doctor Daniel Choy. the American doctor who led the team, said the scientists examined three of four patients treated 25 days after the laser operation. in one patient, the artery had remained unblocked. but in the other two patients, the arteries hadelosed up again after the treatment Dr. Choy said he does not know if the new laser treat-ment might someday replace medical operations now used to treat arteriosclerosis patients. He said more study is needed before scientists will really know if the new method is safeand effective. The American government has not yet given doctors permission to use thelaser treatment on human heart patients in the United States. Why is arteriosclerosis more dangerous than other diseases?

A.Because the patient’s artery will narrow when ht、stuffers from it.
B.Because the patient’s artery will harden when hr suffers from it.
C.Because the patient’s artery will widen when he suffers from it.
D.Because the fatty materials in the patient artery wilt block the flow of blood so it will reduce the hearth blood supply.

2.Why do ihe American doctors think of using laser light to treat heart disease?

A.Because laser light is quite powerful.
B.Because laser light is penetrating
C.Because laser light can destroy the blocking materials in human’s artory
D.Because laser light can travel through the human body.

3.Based on the la?er operation treatment of three patients, what can we infer from the passage?

A.Laser light treatment is safe and effective
B.Laser light treatment is dangerous and ineffective
C.Laser light treatment still requires much more studies
D.Government should encourage doctors to do resenrch of laser light treatment on the human body.

4.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.leaser light treatment of heart disease should take the place of the traditional operation.
B.Laser light treatment has been proved belter and more trffccJivc than the tradilional operation.
C.More advanced technology should be encouraged to try on
D.Laser light treatment of heart disease still needs more research

5.Some people believe that international sport creates good will between the nations and that if countries play together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: thatinternational contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to suport the view that sports encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests. One country received its second-place medals with visible indignation after the hockey(曲棍球队)final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said: This wasn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished. " The president of the Federation said later that such behavior. could result in the suspension of the team for at least three years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia. after a disputable end to iheir contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won. by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds sill to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals. Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non- national teams, might be loo much lo hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism.According to the author, recent Olympic Games have____.

A.created goodwill between the nations
B.bred only false national pride
C.barely showed any international friendship
D.led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred

6.What did the manager mean by saying,”…Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished"?

A.His team would no longer take part in, international games.
B.Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.
C.There should be no more hockey matches Organized by the Federation.
D.The Federation should be dissolved

7.The basketball example implied that____.

A.too much patriotism was displayed in the incident
B.the announcement to prolong the match Was wrong
C.the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision
D.the American team was right in rejecting the silver medals

8.The author gives the two examples in Paragraphs 2 and,3 to show____.

A.how false national pride led to undesirable incidents in international games
B.that sportsmen have been more obedient than they used to be
C.that competittveness in, the games discourages international friendship
D.that unfair decisions are common in Olympic Games

9.Two modes of argumentation have been used on behalf of women's emancipation in Western societies. Arguments in what could be called the “relational" feminist tradition maintain the doctrine of "equality in difference".or equity as distinct for equality. They posit that biological distinctions between the sexes result in a necessary sexual division of labor in the family and throughout society and that women's procreative labor is currently undervalued by society,to the disadvantage of women. By contrast, the individualist feminist tradition emphasizes individual human rights and celebrates women's quest persona autonomy, while downplaying the importance of gender role and minimizing discussion of childbearing and its attendant responsibilities. Before the late nineteenth century, these views coexisted within the feminist movement, often within the writing of the same individual, Between 1890 and 1920, however, relational feminism, which had been the dominant strain in feminist thought, and which still predominates among European and non-Western feminists, lost ground in England and the United States. Because the concept of individual rights was already well established in the Anglo- Saxon legal and political tradition, individualist feminism came to predominate in English-speaking countries. At the same time, the goals of the two approaches began to seem increasingly irreconcilable. Individualist feminists began to advocate a totally gender-blind system with equal rights for all. Reiational feminists, while agreeing that equal educational and economic opportunities outside the home should be available for all women, continued to emphasize women's special contributions to society as homemakers and mothers;they demanded special treatment including protective legislation for women workers ,statesponsored maternity benefits, and paid compensation for housework. Relational arguments have a major pitfall because they underline women's physiological and psychological distinctiveness, they are often appropriated by political adversaries and used to endorse male privilege. But the individualist approach, by attacking gender roles, denying the significance of physiological difference vand condemning existing familial institutions as hopelessly patriarchal, has often simply treated as irrelevant the family roles important to many women. If the individualist framework, with its claim for women's autonomy, could be harmonized with the family-oriented concerns of relational feminists,a more fruitful model for contemporary feminist politics could emerge. The author mentions the well-established nature of the concept of individual rights in the Anglo-Saxon legal and political tradition in order to____.

A.illustrate the influence of individualist feminist thought on more general in tellectual trends in English history
B.argue that feminism was already a part of the larger Anglo,Saxon intellectual tradition, even though this has often gone unnoticed by critics of women semancipation
C.explain the decline in individualist thinking among feminists in non-English-speaking countries
D.help aecount for an increasing shift toward individualist feminism among feminists in English-speaking countries

10.The author believes that_____.

A.the predominance of individualist feminism in English-speaking countries is a historical phenomenon, the causes of which have not yet been investigated
B.the individualist and relational feminist views are irreconciliable given their theoretical differences concerning the foundations of society
C.a consensus concerning the direction of future feminist politics will probably soon emerge, given the awareness among feminists of the need for coopera-tion among women
D.political adversaries of feminism often misuse arguments based on differences between the sexes to argue that the existing social system should be maintained

11.It can be inferred from the passage that the individualist feminist tradition denies the validity of which of the following statements?

A.A division of labor in a social group can result in increased efficiency with regard to the performance of group tasks.
B.A division of labor in a social group causes inequities in the distribution of opportunities and benefits among group members.
C.A division of labor on the basis of gender in a social group is necessitated by the existence of sex-linked biological differences between male and female members of the group.
D.Culturally determined distinctions based on gender in a social group foster the existence of differing attitudes and opinions among group members.

12.According to the passage, relational feminists and individualist feminists agree that____.

A.individual human rights take precedence over most other social claims
B.the gender-based division of labor in society should eliminated
C.laws guaranteeing equal treatment for all citizens regardless of gender should be passed
D.the same educational and economic opportunities should be available to both sexes

13.Many United States companies have, unfortunately, mad the search for legal proteetion from import competition into a major line of work. Since 1980 the United States International Trade Commission (lTC) bas received about 280 complaints alleing(宣称) darmage from imports that benefit from subsidies by foreign governments. Another 340 charge that foreign companies. “dumped" their products in the United Ststes at"less than fair value". Even when no unfair practices are all alleged, the simple claim that an industry has been injured by imports is sufficient grounds to seek relief. Contrary to the generat impression, this quest for import relief has hurt more companies than it has helped. As corporations begin to function globally, they develop an intricate Web of marketing, production, and research relationships. The complexity of these relationships makes it unlikely that a system of import relief laws will meet the strategic needs of all the units under the same parent company. Internationalization increases the danger that foreign companies will use import relief laws against the very companies the laws were designed to protect. Suppose a United States owned company establishes an overseas plant to manufacture a product while its competitor makes the same product in the United States. If the competitor can prove injury from the imports and that the United States company received a subsidy from a foreign government to build its plant abroad-the United States company's products will be uncompetitive in the United States , since they would be subject to duties. Perhaps the most brazen case occurred when the ITC investigated allegations that Canadian companies were injuring the United States salt industry by dumping rock salt, used to deice ronds. The bizarre(古怪的)aspect of the complaint was that a foreign conglomerate(企业集团)with United States operations was crying for help against a United States company with foreign operations. The"United States company claiming injury was a subsidiary of a Dutch conglomerate, while the"Canadian"companies included a subsidiary of a Chicago firm that was the second-largest domestie producer of rock salt. The main idea of the passage can best be described as____.

A.arguing against the increased internationalization of United States corporations
B.warning that the application of laws affeting trade frequently has unintended comquences
C.demonstrating that foreign based firms receive more subsides from their governments than United States firms receive from the United States government
D.advocating the use of trade restrictions for “dumped” products but not for other imporis

14.It can be inferred from the passage that the minimal basis for a complaint to the International Trade Commission is____

A.a foreign competitor has received a subsidy from a foreign govérnment
B.a foreign competitor has substantially increased the volume of products shipped to the United States
C.a foreign competitor is seling products in the United States at less than fair value
D.the company requesting import relief has been injured by the sale of imports in the Umited States

15.The relationship between the last paragraph and the other paragraphs can best be described as____

A.it presents a recommendation based on the evidence presented earlier
B.it discusses an exceptional case in which the results expected by the author of the passage were not obtained
C.it introduces an additional area of concern not mentioned earlier
D.it cites aspecific case that illstrates a problem presented more generaly in the previous paragraph
