You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

0.One thing almost everyone is agreed on, including Americans, is that they place a very high valuation upon success. Success does not necessarily mean material rewards, but recognition of some sort preferably measurable. If the boy turns out to be a preacher (传教) instead of a businessman, that"s all right. But the bigger his church and congregation, the more successful he is judged to be.
A good many things contributed to this accent on success. There was the Puritan (清教) belief in the virtue of work, both for its own sake and because the rewards it brought were regarded as signs of God"s love. There was the richness of opportunity in a land waiting to be settled. There was the lack of a settled society with fixed ranks and classes, so that a man was certain to rise through achievement.
There was the determination of the immigrant to gain in the new world what had been denied to him in the old. And on the part of his children an urge to throw off the immigrant Onus (负担) by still more success and still more rise in a fluid, classless society. Brothers did not compete within the family for the favor of the parents as in Europe, but strove for success is the outer world, along paths of their own choosing.
In American society, one"s success is measured by______.

5.Service as an ideal has spread out into many branches of American life. More and more the institution of a community are expected to anticipate (预见) the needs of the citizen, and to make possible a healthier, happier, richer life. Meanwhile service as a commercial activity has leaped ahead. Since 1870 the experienced labor force engaged in production of services has risen from 25% to 35%. Whether you want a daily diaper (尿布) service for the new infant, a carwash (many of them mechanized so as to be completed in ten or fifteen minutes ) or a clipping for your dog, you are sure to find it. The yellow pages in the back of every telephone booklist hundreds of such offerings.
While the supermarkets have been moving in the direction of self-service in exchange for lower prices, smaller enterprises have sprung up to supply home service to those who want it, especially to the many people who now live in rural or suburban areas. Our country district is visited regularly by a grocer, a greengrocer, several bakers, a dispenser of frozen foods and there ice cream men, not to mention the occasional salesman of brushes, insurance, magazines or cars, and that absolutely indispensable country institution, the rural letter carrier.
The accent on service suggests an attempt to blend (混合) the two conflicting foes in the national character-the hard-headed (固执的) drive for business success and the soft religiously inspired urge to serve others. As the recipients of such services we in turn find ourselves wanting to support them all, for if they are taking the trouble to serve us it seems only fair that they should be helped to succeed.
Which of following best describes the main idea of the passage? ______.

A.Americans are the best served in the world

10.Because smoking is a form. of addiction, 80% percent of smokers who quit usually experience some withdrawal symptoms (断症状瘾). These may include headache, light-headedness, and chest pains. Psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, short-term depression, and inability to concentrate, may also appear. The main psychological symptom is increased irritability. People become so irritable, in fact, that they say the feel "like killing some body". Yet there in no evidence that quitting smoking leads to physical violence.
Some people seem to lose all their energy and drive, wanting only to sleep. Others react in exactly the opposite way. Becoming so over energized that they can"t find enough activity to burn off their excess energy. For instance, one woman said she cleaned out all her closets completely and was ready to go next to start on her neighbor"s. Both these extremes, however, eventually, the symptoms may be intense for two or three days, but within 10 to 14 days after quitting, most subside (平静下来). The truth is that after people quit smoking, they have more energy, they generally will need less sleep, and feel better about themselves.
Quitting smoking not only extends the ex-smoker"s life. but adds new happiness and meaning to one"s current life. Most smokers state that immediately after they quit smoking, they start noticing dramatic differences in their overall health and vitality.
Quitting is beneficial at any age, no matter how long a person has been smoking. The death rate of an ex-smoker decreases after quitting. If the patient quits before a serious disease has developed, his/her body may eventually be able to restore itself almost completely.

15.Distance learning has moved far away from the traditional correspondence course, aimed at the individual student working alone. The global reach of the Internet makes it possible to unite geographically scattered students in a virtual classroom. Methods such as multimedia, video-conferencing and the Internet will increasingly allow students both to proceed at their own pace, and to interact with one another and their teachers.
Even without taking the technology to its limits, the idea of education as a lifelong process is catching on throughout the industrialized world. Already, working adults who pursue their studies part-time make up roughly half of students taking college courses in the United States.
However, there is debate in scholar circles about how far new technology should be used for teaching academic subjects in which personal contacts between teacher and student are still vital. Britain"s Open University, for example, a world leader in distance education, has embraced information technology cautiously, believing it to be no substitute for books and the exchange of ideas at live tutorials and summer schools.
But the Open University is also moving with the tide. It has set up a "knowledge media institute" to explore ways of adopting information technology. Some teachers are concerned about this trend, arguing that the heavy investment that students are expected to make in computer and communications equipment contradicts the concept of "open" cost, of course, is and important factor in many developing countries, where few people have computers or even phones. Rather than uniting the world, the new technologies could lead to societies of information haves and have-nots.
