三、3.Reading Comprehension
Part III Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
1.The biggest safety threat facing today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.
RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has recommended that all airlines ban (禁止) such devices from being used during "critical" stages of flight particularly take- off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. (76) Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights.
The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect all aircraft"s computers. (77) Experts know that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.
The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受捐的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. (78) As worrying, though, is the passenger who can"t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music"s too loud.
The main idea of this passage is ______.
A.a new rule for all airlines
B.the defects of electronic devices
C.a possible cause of aircraft crashes
D.effective safety measures for air flight
2.
What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?
A.They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.
B.They may have taken place during take - off and landing.
C.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers" portable computers.
D.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.
3.
The reason why few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices is ______.
A.they don"t believe there is such a danger as radio interference
B.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved
C.they have other effective safety measures to fall back on
D.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players
4.
Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane"s computers?
A.Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.
B.Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.
C.Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.
D.Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.
5.
It can be guessed from the passage that the author ______.
A.is in favor of prohibiting passengers" use of electronic devices completely
B.regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight
C.hasn"t formed his own opinion on this problem
D.has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference
7.When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. (79) It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry (模糊的). Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant objects clearly.
People who are farsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm"s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people"s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people olden became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle. To prove this to yourself, look at object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object"s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.
We should take good care of our eyes ______.
A.only when we can see well
B.only when we cannot see perfectly
C.even if we can see dell
D.only when we realize how important our eyes are
8.

13.(80) Footracing is a popular activity in the United States. It"s not only seen as a competitive sport, but also as a way to exercise, to enjoy the comraderies (同志情谊) of like - minded people, and to donate money to a good cause. Though serious runners may spend months training to compete, other runners and walkers might not train at all. Those not competing to win might run in an effort to beat their own time, or simply to enjoy the fun and exercise. People of all ages, from those less than one - year old (who may be pushed in strollers) to those in their 80s, enter into this sport. The races are held on city streets, on college campuses, through parks, and in suburban areas, and are commonly 5 to 10 kilometers in length.
The largest footrace in the world is the 12 - kilometer Bay to Breakers race that is held in San Francisco every spring. This race begins on the east side of the city near San Francisco Bay and ends on the west side at the Pacific ocean. In 1993 there were 80, 000 people running in this race through the streets and hills of San Francisco. In the front are the serious runners who compete to win, and who might finish in as little as 34 minutes. Behind them are the thousands who take several hours to finish. In the back of the race are those who wear costumes just for fun. In 1993 there was a group of men all of whom dressed up like Elvis Presley. There was a group of firefighters who were all tied in a long line and were carrying a firehouse. One year there was a bridal (新婚的) party in which the bride dressed in a long white gown and the groom wore a tuxedo (晚礼服).
